Directory Submission

The number of online directories has exploded recently. With the success of Yahoo and Google, many are following suit by offering their own version of search engine like Yahooligan, Web World Index, World Site Index, etc. Each search engine makes its own directory on the different interests that it finds relevant. What with all the new search engines and niche specific directories available now, it has become a problem among webmasters where to submit their site links. A website about sports and fashion should not be listed under medical or pet care directory. Even when it is in the right directory, it still might not result in hits if SEO gives it a low priority listing and relegates it to the bottom of available entries.

This problem has given rise to a group of companies that offer directory submission services. Highly paid and armed with the right know-how and marketing savvy, these enterprising young men and women communicate with search engines, “offer” their client’s website and “suggest” how much priority the search engine should assign it. They do this by knowing how the search engine “thinks”. Knowing which domain name and keywords raise “flags”, a directory submitter tries to convince the search engine to take the proffered package and store it where it can be found by web browsers. And just like the port-keys in Harry Potter’s world, touching these links with the cursor and clicking on it will whisk the browser to the client’s website.

This is slow work requiring tweaks, revisions and several “talks” with the search engine. Being first on the list doesn’t mean being there for long because other submitters also try to push their client’s entry to the head of the list. A submitter patiently rechecks and adjusts the connections to move it up the directory listing.

Enter another techie armed with a software program that speeds up the process. What better qualified to talk to a program than another program? When you automate directory submission, the machines don’t tweak or adjust anything. In automatic directory submission, the computer is programmed to throw the whole kit and caboodle at every search engines it finds. The search engines grab what they can, stuffs it anywhere and move on. When they meet again, the process is repeated and whatever is discarded is just proverbially dropped on the cyber floor. The automated directory submission program does this again and again, filling directories with the entries and keywords. This brusque method sometimes works and sometimes fails, depending on what keywords are fed into the program. But through sheer numbers, the method is bound to succeed sooner or later.

So if you’re deciding on which method to use for your problem, it becomes your choice to either patiently coax the right search engine manually, or use the program in a hit or miss saturation bombing of every search engine in sight. Knowing what you want and how they work could help make up your mind.
